Media Advisory: Ultra-Low-Emission Railroad Locomotive Commissioning Ceremony on Monday, July 12, in Butler, Pa.

BUTLER, Pa., Jul 07, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Media are invited to attend a commissioning ceremony for a new, ultra-low-emission, "GenSet" locomotive on Monday, July 12, at 1:30 p.m. EDT at the Butler locomotive shop of the Buffalo & Pittsburgh Railroad at the intersection of PA-68 and US-422.

Scheduled speakers include U.S. Rep. Glenn W. Thompson Jr.; Pa. Sen. Donald C. White; Pa. Rep. Brian L. Ellis; Pa. Department of Transportation Secretary Allen D. Biehler; Southwestern Pennsylvania Corporation President and CEO James Hassinger; Butler County Board of Commissioners Chairman A. Dale Pinkerton; Butler City Councilman Richard Schontz Jr.; Buffalo & Pittsburgh Railroad President Raymond A. Goss; and Genesee & Wyoming President and CEO John C. Hellmann.

Built via public-private partnership among the Buffalo & Pittsburgh Railroad, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Department of Transportation and Brookville Equipment Corporation, the new GenSet locomotive uses two smaller, computer-controlled diesel engines in place of the single, large diesel engine in a typical railroad locomotive. By starting the second diesel engine only when needed, a GenSet locomotive significantly reduces fuel consumption and exhaust emissions.

The Buffalo & Pittsburgh Railroad is the largest regional railroad in Pa. and operates over 368 miles of track between Buffalo, N.Y., and Pittsburgh. In May 2010, the railroad received the E.H. Harriman Memorial Gold Award for the best employee safety record among railroads working less than four million employee hours in 2009. It also received two President's Awards from the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association for best employee safety record and for most hours of injury-free operation in 2009. Buffalo & Pittsburgh Railroad, Inc. is a Genesee & Wyoming company.

Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (GWI) (NYSE: GWR) owns and operates short line and regional freight railroads in the United States, Canada, Australia and the Netherlands.
